Question asked by Christy Belsom 2063 days ago
Hi everyone! I have 2 clients that yawn excessively during exercise. What causes this?
During boot camp I have a girl who is working hard but yawns excessively - I thought it could be improper breathing so I have been reminding her. I just gained a new client this week and during our one on one strength training session she also yawned excessively. Could there be an underlying health risk?

I find it to be the bodies cry for oxygen. If you have a pulse oximeter, hook it up to them next time they start with the yawns. I frequently notice a drop in SpO2 when this happens. Nothing to be concerned with in most cases; just be aware when its going on. They may just need a different recovery strategy.

Could she be tired? Many people don't like to miss their workouts and train even though they are sleep deprived.
What time of day is your boot camp. Is it 5:30AM? Is it late in the day? Many people yawn as a consequence of fatigue.

I think it could be lack of oxygen or possibly they are a bit dehydrated?
I would assist them with showing them how to take deep breaths and ask them to practice this throughout their day

Lack of oxygen to the brain is what I've been told, but yawning is still a grey area in the sciences.

Hello Christy,
I also believe yawning is caused by a lack of oxygen. Are your clients breathing to use the full capacity of their lungs? I have also heard that the cause of yawning is still up for debate.
Take care.

As soon as I start doing yoga with deep breathing techniques, I start yawing horrible and can't seem to be able to control it. I know that the vagus nerve from the parasympathetic nerve system has to do with this, like over stimulation, but I was hoping someone knew more of a medical explanation. Other than that, I almost never yawn.
