I was just reading the other day that the health club industry has over the past 20 or so year, continued to grow despite economic downturns ... and that's including three recessions!
The only recent statistics that I can locate for you are here
•U.S. Clubs: 30,022 (as of 1/09)
•U.S. Health Club Members: 45.5 million (as of 1/09)
•Total U.S. Industry Revenues for 2008: $19.1 billion
