Have you dealt with clients who have gotten water toxicity? i.e. too much water?

Eating DisordersDrinking water

I work with people with eating disorders who sometimes drink well over a gallon of water a day, eat very little and, at times, experience dizziness and the inability to concentrate, and pass out(which is not the same as a hypoglycemic episode). My understanding is that this can be caused if someone drinks over six cups of water in under one hour. Does anyone have more information on the topic?

I wittnessed Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH) once in basic training during my time in the Army. The drill sargents did something they called forced hydration, where they made soldiers drink entire two 2 qt canteens of water, refill them and do it again. One soldier had to do it like four times because he kept "spilling" some of the water. He suffered hyponatremia but its the only case I've ever personally seen.
Here is a great article on Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH):

What you are referring to is hyponatremia, it is a condition where the blood sodium levels are abnormally low. Here is a link to the mayo clinic and what they have to say on the subject...its good read.

I've never had this experience, however, I've attached a link to the American College of Sports Medicine position statement on Exercise and Fluid replacement.

Hyponatremia is menntioned in the the article as well as fluid replacement guidlines. Hope this is helpful to you.
