Has anyone experienced burning/itching skin after running? What is it and how do you make it stop?
After running and sometimes hiking for a long time (at least 30 min) my legs start itching and burning and it's very uncomfortable. It basically stops my run. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does it's terrible. Any ideas on how to help?

In the military this is way too common. It usually occurs when salts build up on the skin restricting perspiration. The skin begins itching and burning in an attempt to get you to scratch off some of the build up. Not saying this is what is happening but if you wash the skin (I used baby wipes in a baggie) then it could be just this simple.

Thank you Stephen, you are genius. You are the first person to realize that it only happened when running and was not a crazy dermatitis condition. I love the simple solution!

I had to deal with this every time soldiers were marching or running distance in Hawaii. Went as far as to scrape it off with a credit card before cleaning the area. I feel for ya. I know its an aweful feeling. "KISS (Keep It Seriously Simple)"

I know clinically that is called pruritis.
Taber's cyclopedic Medical dictionary defines it as a "tingling or faintly burning skin sensation that prompts a person to rub or scratch.
You should go see your doctor as I've never come across in any of my exercise physiology textbooks that indicate burning/itching as a physiological response.
Perhaps a dermatologist might be of help.

I've only experienced that when it is cold or when I haven't ran in a few weeks. I've heard it has something to do with the blood rushing throught the capillaries at the surface and causing itching. Maybe a longer warmup would work.

Is it on skin exposed to the sun? Could it have to do with sun screen or lack thereof or maybe a reaction to sunscreen? There are certain kinds of sunscreen which - when I begin to sweat - cause a skin reaction.
Good luck. I hope you will find a solution.

Talk to a medical professional, that is outside our scope to diagnose.

Masha, I thought you might want to know that that word pruritis is a latin word that means "to itch." In Italian we say "prurito" pronounced proo REE toe.
Just means to itch. It was a common occurrence in Italy. I feel confident a dermatologist can help you get to the cause of the itch.
Best.

Also, check your laundry detergent! And maybe try a perfume, dye free hypoallergenic one.

I would go get checked out and let your physician know your symptoms
My daughter would get this, she was allergic to grass!
Some people are allergic to sweat, but we can't diagnose so go get looked at.
