Has anyone compared the Precision Nutrition certification with the ACE Lifestyle & Weight Management Cert?

Personal TrainerCertificationsNutrition Nutrition CoachingCoaching/Lifestyle Coaching

I would like to be able to provide my clients with better information and more tools for successful weight loss to accompany their fitness achievements. I know there are many nutrition programs available, but I like what I've seen from Precision Nutrition and I just don't know how to compare it to other cert programs. For example, if ACE's program will get me to the same level of knowledge and scope of practice, it's alot less expensive. Any advice out there?

I would go with LWMC first. It has been many years since I took this certification (I was actually in the first round, and there was not even a textbook), and my knowledge may not be all that up to date on what they do now.

To be successful in helping people to lose weight, the coaching part is a lot more important than the nutrition part. Let's face it: people who want to lose weight know all about fruits and vegetables and that they need to eat less and exercise more. It is in applying that knowledge and making changes in their lifestyle where they need help.

Thanks for your reply, Karin. It seems that LWMC is a bit heavier on the coaching where PN is about 1:1 nutrition:coaching . Lots to think about. I appreciate your input!

Hi Deborah,

with all nutrition-related certifications, you have to be mindful that your scope of practice may be regulated by the state you live in.

I hold the ACE LWMC certification myself and recently decided to also pursue the NASM Fitness Nutrition Specialist certification to become more knowledgeable in that field. However, this will not widen my scope of practice, only the depth of it.

I would suggest that you decide what it is you want to provide and then check with local regulations what certification (or degree) you need for it.

I am glad I read this. I am studying for my LWMC cert and right after plan to pursue the FNS. Wasn't sure if it was necessary but think so now.

Thanks for the reply! Ok, I get that the scope of practice doesn't change and that my state has a role in defining that scope. I think what confuses me is how different the programs are. Clearly LWMC goes into greater depth than what I learned to become a personal trainer. And FNS and PN also go into greater depth, but are there benefits to doing the LWMC first and deciding if its enough for my training practice, or is it worth it to jump in with both feet and do the more in-depth program? I just wish I knew how these certifications programs differ so I feel like I am making an informed choice. Thanks again for any insights.

I don't know much about the specific ins and outs of nutrition certifications, however, I was recently listening to episode 179 of the FitCast with John Beradi and in it, he spoke briefly about the PN Certification. He said that it is not recogonised by any national body and that they are not a nutrition certification company but a nutrition company.

My impression was that this certification teaches you how they have achieved success in their programs and gives you the tools and materials to replicate it with your clients.

It looks amazing and I am a huge fan of John Beradi but if you are looking for something that specifically allows you to widen your scope of practice I would look to a recogonised nutrition certification first, however, if you're looking for something to help in terms of coaching your clients nutrition (rather than offering specifics) PN would be the way to go.

I hope that helps!

Thanks, Sasha. ACE recognizes the Precision Nutrition certification program and it counts towards continuing education credits, so hopefully that means they are recognized...I'm waiting to see a colleague's LWMC materials to compare the 2...it might come down to which program is presented in a way that I can learn and use most effectively.

That's awesome and the podcast was from 2010 so it looks like they're moving in the right direction. Let me know how it goes it you take the PN certification as it's on my list!
