Hi Denise. To answer this question it is best to check with the town or city that you live in. Whether a business license is required, and what type of license is required, is location specific. Each town, city, county has something like a "Business License" agency as part of their city government, so give them a call.

I hope that this helps.

In order to know if you need a business license or not, you need to talk to your tax person I believe. Obtaining a business license is for tax reasons and in some states, if you do business under your legal name, you won't need a business license. Like I said, the best way to find out if you need one or not is to see the person who helps you with your taxes. Good luck!

Hi Denise!

In addition to the prior statements... I was advised to get an LLC help with expenses at the end of the year. Boy has it helped! Mileage, bottled water, certifications, CEC's, meals away from home, computer, cell phone, car and much more!

Kindest,
J David Mychael

The small business bureau can also be a great resource on what is necessary to get a business started where you live. In some states you not only have to register your business, but also the name of your business (2 different forms, 2 different processes) if it is different from your name.

I operate a mobile wellness firm within the DC, Maryland, VA Tri-State area using only my registered business name and DBA (Doing Business As) names - registered to my headquarters (my home). In most states you do need to be a registered business and have Liability insurance for your company, equipment and employees. As everyone has already mentioned though the requirements are different for every locale.

Hi Denise,

I run a small business in Hawaii where I travel to clients homes to train them through yoga, pilates, and personal training. When I decided to open my business I went to the Business Action Center. They helped me with all the paperwork I needed. I filed a LLC, General Excise Tax ID number, and a Federal ID number with the IRS. You can find out a lot about your states requirements online, although it was very helpful for me to go into an office and work with someone who knew exactly what I needed and how to complete the forms correctly. The Business Action Center's services were free. They also had a attorney come in once a week that was available to answer any legal questions I might have had. The process can seem overwhelming at first, but it is a great learning experience of everything that goes into building a business from the ground up. Wish you the best.

In good health,
Vanessa
