Foam Rolling
What reading and/or DVDs would you suggest to learn more about foam rolling? Are there any cont. ed courses on this? I have only seen a few books, no CEU or video course though.

Here's an article on the IDEA website with information and videos regarding corrective exercises:
http://www.ideafit.com/fitness-library/the-top-10-corrective-exercises
Here's an online course through PTonthenet:
http://www.ptonthenet.com/courses/Foam-Roller---Self-Myofascial-Release-...
It includes the following:
Why and how of SMR
The kinetic chain and relationships
Effects of fascia and collagen on movement
Overview of neuromuscular anatomy
Assessing with the roller
Mobilizers – what are they? when do I use them?
Video clips of various positions and applications on the roller
Types of acceptable SMR tools
Review and FAQ
Here's some detailed information from NASM on flexibility training and the importance of SMR (when and how to incorporate):
http://www.nasm.org/hfpnpreview/article.aspx?id=2371&term=self+myofascia...
You can also find courses at local fitness conferences, like the IDEA World Fitness Conference, ACE Fitness Symposium, Atlanta MANIA, DCAC, etc.
I routinely use the foam roller with my clients and for myself. Just be cautious of your clients' health history and use only when appropriate. Try it out and see how it improves your fitness program!

Hi Raven,
I want to draw your attention to the MELT method which uses foam rollers as well but not for myofascial release. MELT stands for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique, and it is a self-treatment technique for connective tissue. It includes techniques such as neck and low back decompression. Its goal is to rehydrate connective tissue and also to quiet the stress reflex.
I have a lot more information about MELT on my own web site www.meltnc.com, and there is also www.meltmethod.com.
If you have a chance, see whether there is an instructor near you where you can take a class.
I am one of the few (so far) MELT master instrcutors. This method has fundamentally changes the way I look at the body and how I train my clients. I was very familiar with other uses of the foam roller as an NASM CPT but MELT really is a cut above it.
Good luck.

I find the research undertaken by Dr. Janet Travell to be very helpful in understanding myofascial pain and trigger points.
Too, I believe a having a a very good understanding of connective tissue is pivotal before one begins usings approaches such as foam rolling.
I wish you the best in your research.
