Fit pros who work with young kids:What tips & tricks can you share about how to creatively corrale for the cooldown?
We've been called on to help kids get active and some of us are new at working with groups of young kids. Once you've gotten them moving and playing, what are some fun, creative ways to calm them down, corrale them and do a good cool down?

The key to cool down is what i call re freshment time. This is critical for kids especially when outdpor activitoes are involved. Its a time for them to replenish bodily fluis, have a lite snack and physically slow down from their previous activity. This slow down can be achieved in multiple ways.

Hi Joy. As a Youth Conditioning Specialist I work with a lot of kids and one way that I find is best to get everyone back together for cool-down is to play a game. What game is less important than the fact that you call it 'Game Time' and gather everyone around the circle or whatever to play. Kids LOVE games and if you coin your Cool-Down period as a "Game Time" period instead, they will come running! :-) Then, once you have them collected you can cool them down within the confines of some sort of 'game.'
I hope that this helps

Hello Joy,
I like to do a game or group drill with everyone in a circle, then go to the floor work from there. Have fun with the youngsters.
Take care.

I like having them sit in a circle and look into the eyes of the person across from them and hold it for as long as possible
I also like doing Yoga type poses such as child's pose with a focus on breathing.
I agree with LaRue that kids love to play games.
I also will do "partner stretching" with them

I have sometimes used Follow The Leader for warm up and/or cool down. I bet Simon Says could work too. You could start as the leader/Simon and then as your kids become more familiar with stretches/cool down routine, muscle groups etc., they can "earn" a chance to be in charge of the game too. I think fun is key! It's hard to get them to hold still, so maybe a dynamic cool down with some traveling/dynamic stretches (heel kicks & high knees through a walk, Frankensteins , etc.) If you want to do some mat work or static stretching, make it a challenge - can you hold this for 10 seconds? Let's count to ten in Spanish/French/Pig Latin whatever while we hold the stretch, count backwards, count by 2s, 3s etc. - just something to keep their brains occupied and some kind of challenge/game element to it. Have Fun!
