Question asked by Leslie LaPlace 1921 days ago
Does anyone have any recommendations for "must-reads" with respect to fitness and/or nutrition? Thanks!
I would like to start doing some reading in addition to trade journals. Anyone have a recommendation on a "must-read" book on fitness and/or nutrition?
Thanks!

Hi Leslie,
on nutrition in a wider sense, I recommend the books by Michael Pollan who is a proponent of eating as close to the natural source as possible. His best known titles are 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' and 'In Defense of Food'. Here is a link to his web site: http://michaelpollan.com/. He also takes a look at the food industry.
What I like about the books is that they will still be relevant even if (and when) some current knowledge about nutrition itself will be replace with more insights. I believe that his message will remain relevant.

Hi Leslie,
I thought of one more that has been very helpful to me: it is called "The End of Overeating" and is by David Kessler. It is not only a review of the factors that lead to overeating but is also a very candid review of somebody who has walked in those shoes. I always try to empathize but some issues are difficult to imagine. His book has given me a very valuable insight into the mindset of somebody who feels quite powerless in the face of food and has helped me approach overweight clients even better. It has afforded me a way to open the subject in a way that the clients feel understood in their emotional framework.

Great recommendations, Karin! I, too, really enjoy reading Pollan’s work given how practical his approach is to eating and nutrition. I’d have to say that my favorite book of his is ‘Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual.’ There are TONS of simple and useful tips that can help improve most people’s eating habits (including my own).
As for fitness books, I’ve found a lot of value in pretty much anything written by Gray Cook. He has a wealth of experience in the field of functional movement screenings and progressions. I got hooked on Cook after reading his book ‘Athletic Body in Balance.’
Leslie, do you work with a particular type of clientele (i.e. special populations, elderly, children/adolescents, sport specific)? Let me know and I might be able to recommend some additional resources for you to check out. Otherwise, happy reading!

I like David Kessler: "Sugar, Fat and Salt"
Robert Lustig: "Fat Chance"
Love Michael Pollan also.

Must reads that I have enjoyed come mostly from the Weston A. Price group.
Nutrition & Physical Degeneration - W. A. Price. -
Nourishing Traditions - Sally Fallon - Overall great read, but tends to lean towards a high use of grains.
The Fourfold Path to Healing - Thomas Cowen - Endless source of information on functional nutrition.
And this one is not part of the WAP Foundation, although he combines moderns trends in nutrition with a rich foundation in Chinese culture and history. He is also a vegetarian, but does not believe that vegetarianism is for everyone.
Healing with Whole Foods: Oriental Traditions and Modern Nutrition - Paul Pitchford

Hello Leslie LaPlace,
I could spend all day in the library's health and fitness section...among others. There are too many "must-reads" to mention one or two; just browse and enjoy.
Take care.

It's not nutrition or fitness, but a fabulous book on goal setting and happiness is "Creating Your Best Life" by Caroline Miller

Any of Dr. Fuhrman's books. "Eat to Live," "Eat for Health," "Super Immunity." I also recommend his videos and audio series.
