Does anyone have any good NEW ideas for a motivational program to kick the new year off with?
I am looking for something different to kick off the new year that will motivate and encourage people in their wellness lifestyle. Something different, not the same old things everyone does! It needs to be simple, as many of the participants will be seniors! If it's too complicated they definately will not adhere to it!! LOL! I am hoping for something new, creative, and FUN!!

I like a point system that has the person competing with themselves. I don't like competition against other people in health and fitness because then you are hoping other people fail. In sports this is fine, but with health and fitness we should want everyone to do as good as possible. They could receive a certain number of points for workouts, stretching, and nutrition.

IF YOU can promise some results w/minimal equipment in maximal time, that always works, like 20 minute Start the Year Blast...simple, effective, safe exercises using bodyweight that show people results FAST!

I like that Lawrence! Good idea to incorporate with some other stuff! Simple..I like it! Thanks!

I challenged my clients to list five things they are grateful for at least once a week. People who do this are happier, more optimistic about the future, and they tend to exercise more! It costs nothing and it gives immediate, positive results.

I'm not sure if this nis what you're looking for but..I'm in love with Kinesis and TRX at the gym? Again not sure if you're looking at this kind of something different
I am looking more for something a whole group could do, with rewards, etc. That kind of thing. I love the TRX too! I am looking more for a motivational program - punch cards, make so many classes get a prize. That kind of thing, but I am hoping for something very creative!! Not the same old things!

Maggie,
I'd like to suggest a book I personally find useful as far as coming up with ideas for a group of people. You can always adapt the ideas for the seniors you are working with.
I hope you find it helpful too.
The name of the book is called "Health Promotion Ideas That Work - 84 Proven Activities for the Workplace. It's written by Timothy E. Glaros.
Here's another idea...
Have you ever considered become Silver Sneakers certified? The Silver Sneakers program is geared toward seniors 65 years old and older. I found that after taking that course, I became more effective and my seniors as the four nursing homes I teach at love it.
By the way, I teach Zumba Gold and it has really given me more ideas as far as choreography is concerned for Zumba Gold.
I hope these ideas are helpful to you.

I am going to check out that book for sure! As far as the Silver Sneakers - I have not done that yet, but I have many other "Senior" certifications along with Zumba Gold and Zumba Gold Toning licensing! We have alot of "young seniors" as we have age 50+ attending our facility. It's funny as that age group does not like to be considered "seniors" (I'm in that group and sort of understand-LOL!). At any rate these are all great ideas. I appreciate it! I am definately going to check out that book and maybe down the road think about the Silver Sneakers!! THANKS!!

YES!!! Definitely look into Body Back! www.bodybackworkout.com
It's an instructor certification for a results-based program for moms. It has nutritional coaching, high intensity workouts, motivational and inspirational components...just what moms need (moms of ANY age!). It has been an amazing program to offer!! Check it out...

Hey Maggie,
I agree with Nick about the point system. We actually did something similar at our club that we called "Project Smiley Face." If the class had a smiley face next to the title on the schedule than that meant the class was beginner friendly. In addition to that, the classes that we wanted to feature that week, got extra smiley face raffle tickets. The participants signed their name and phone number to the back of the tickets and then at the end of the promotion we held a party, drew tickets and awarded all kinds of prizes!
We did something very similar during the month of July to coincide with the Tour De France-- however, the focus is to get people in the club during the summer as well as get them to try other classes that are a good compliment to indoor cycling.
Hope that helps!
