Question asked by Danielle Vindez 182 days ago
Do we have access to group health insurance for independent contractors?
As my insurance rates continue to escalate and my income drops I am looking for health insurance cost savings. As a group of fitness enthusiasts with IDEA membership status, have we leverage for group discounts?

Hi Danielle,
this question has been posed before, and there seems to be only a link to an insurance company. https://www.extendhealth.com/idea

Hi Karin,
Thanks for your reply. That link is pretty much a deadend. It leads you to extendhealth, who brokers for various insurance companies. As I understand it, from conversations with two agents, they do not offer anything beyond what I can acquire as an independent buyer.
Seems that a group this large, IDEA fitness experts, should be able to leverage HMO rates, unfortunately because we do not work for one employer this is not presently possible.
We may have to wait for the Affordable Care Act to kick into full gear in 2014.

I haven't heard of anything for fitness professionals, though I do know of other professional groups who do the same thing for independant contractors, small business owners (under 10 employees), etc. Its usually done on a state by state basis for that specific group of professionals.

Hi Jocelyn,
Yes, my friend who employees six people in California managed to get a group discounted insurance rate. He pays considerable less then I do. Seems like a lost opportunity for some creative broker, and certainly for independent fitness professionals. The insurance companies wins big.

Hello Danielle,
I would agree with Jocelyn as I have not heard of any companies in our state as well. Also, you have a good point for a business opportunity.
Let us know what you find out.
Sincerely,
Michael

Danielle,
Have you looked through the ACSM?
Have you looked through the ACSM?

Ho Joanne,
How are you?
Thanks for that tip. ACSM actually has really quick responses to insurrance requests, however, their lowesrt quote is $479 a month. This is obviously not a benefit of membership but rather the opposite.
Continued success to you in 2013,
Danielle

Hi Danielle,
In my state this is not an option, so I have use my own health insurance as my provider. I wish things were different and there was a provider that gives better deal to health professionals.
Best,
Harris
