you'll never actually lose the excess skin. Your fat cells will shrink with diet and exercise but you never rid of them, which is why people gain weight back after going back to unhealthy eating habits. You can tone up using resistance weights which will increase muscle size, therefore defining your body.

Depending upon your youth, or skin elasticity, you may be prone to having your skin shrink back as you lose weight. For very large weight losses, this is not the norm. Realistically, a person wanting to lose excess skin is unfortunately looking at a surgical procedure, or perhaps undergarments that will give more support to the areas with excess skin. One woman, a close friend lost 179 pounds with bariatric surgery and exercise. She is at her goal weight, and looks fabulous with her tight fitting jeans and sweater, but won't be wearing a swim suit for the summer. She is looking towards surgery for the excess skin.

Depending on how long the person has been overweight, the extra skin might be tightened using strength training. If not, then surgery to remove excess skin may be considered to keep the skin from chafing and impeding exercise, and also to show the client how much progress they have truly made.

For severely obese people, who lose large amounts of weight, surgery is the only way to move excess skin, but it suggested that they wait until 5 years after they've lost the weight to perform surgery. They suggest 5 years because most weight gain would reoccur in that time frame. If people make it past 5 years, for the most part they are "in the clear". I had one client lose an extra 17lbs of skin. It can be quite a procedure to go through.

Most truely obese individuals will weigh the options of surgical skin removal or tucking it away. The unfortunate fact that insurance companies tell them its cosmetic and therefor NOT covered is leaving many to live with the excess. I have helped a few of my clientele to get approval by proving its physical impedement to their new, healthier lifestyles.
