Brown Fat Craze

There has been a surge among the medical community regarding brown fat and weight loss. I have been reading several articles on this for some time and it seems people are now creating weight loss plans and sales pitches referencing these inconclusive findings.

Have you been asked by clients about this? please share, also, here is an article from CNN, worth reading!

No, none of my clients has approached me about this, and I appreciate the heads-up. It feeds into the desparate search for a shortcut to weight loss.

I'll have to tell my clients that they have to lose weight the old-fashioned way: diet and exercise. It's like these 'Get Rich Quick' schemes. Some people actually do get rich quickly; the ones selling it.

I haven't yet been asked by any clients about it. I had heard about some very inconclusive studies several years ago. I'll have to keep an additional eye, or rather ear, out to see if it starts coming up in my local area.

Hi Kurt. Thanks for the question. I have NOT had any of my clients ask about this, nor have I followed this "craze." As you know, our industry is FILLED with theories, crazes, trends, research etc. some good, some not so good. I always try to reserve opinion, and more importantly utilizing any of these new findings until they are "time-honored." It will be interesting to see where this research leads.

In reading the article link that you provided, one interesting thing that jumps out at me is the following passage from the article:

(Copy): "Still, many questions remain before those next steps can be taken. For one thing, why is it that obese people tend to have very little brown fat compared with lean people? It makes sense, given that brown fat may be a back up system for warming the body when all other sources of fuel, including white fat, have been exhausted. But could a lack of brown fat help explain, in part, why obese people are obese?"

I read this passage and said to myself "What???" If they are saying that obese people (the very people who would benefit from this research and from the whole brown fat findings) have "very little brown fat..." then how will this research actually help or reach obese people or serve to reduce the incidence of obesity? Something to think about in my opinion.
