Best way to eat for a female with a mesomorphic body type.
I have a friend with the muscular mesomorphic body type. She eats like a rabbit, all whole organic vegetables, wheat, and grains. Rarely any sweets and recently took a break from the booze. She is a big girl (not fat) but she really does have thick strong muscles. She is in yoga instructor training and a very fit person. She wants to be slimmer and "lady like" I told her I think it looks like everything she is doing is right on for her health. But are there any female mesomorphs out there who have better advice that eat right and exercise? I don’t have a lot of experience with this body type!

Hi,Heidi!Yes,it's true that the mesomorph will find it relatively easy to build muscle mass, but will have to be certain to include a sufficient variety of exercises in her program so that the muscles develop proportionately and well shaped.
For the mesomorph recommended:
1.A combination of heavy power moves and a variety of shaping exercises.
2.Relatively long workouts with short rest time.
3.A balanced diet with plenty of protein and maintaining a calorie level.
4.Accurately testing body composition. If you do,Heidi, two or three tests in a row
and then find that most of the weight your client are gaining is fat and not muscle,or when she is dieting, she is losing more muscle tissue than fat,you can then alter her training and diet programaccordingly.6

Heidi,
At one point in my life, I weighed a solid 212. I put my body through a lot in order to get that much muscle packed on and to get the physique that I had at the time (eating incredibly healthy--maybe TOO lean now that look back at it). I weigh a comfortable and still solid 186 now. This is the right weight for my body type. I was certainly healthy at 212, but I'm still healthy at 186, and I feel much "freer" if that makes sense.
I shared that with you because I wanted you to know that in my experience, just because my body type is not a mesomorph, that doesn't mean that I couldn't have the appearnace of one through heavy training and constant balance. Was this type of training conducive to my body type? NO, it wasn't in my genetics! That's why it was so hard to keep up with, BUT it IS possible.
Be supportive of your friend, and let her know that she looks great, which I'm sure she does if she is as fit as you say she is. I don't know if body type has a whole heck of a lot to do with her situation. If she is looking for a more feminine physique, she should probably consider muscle lengthening exercises and just tell her to consider training like any person would who is seeking to have lean, slender muscles.(I say lean and slender because that is usually the norm for most women on what is desirable.) Also consider telling your friend to be happy with who she was born to be. We can't help our genetics. It sounds like she is fit and active and otherwise healthy. She has a lot going for her if that's the case!

Hi Heidi,
oh that we could transform ourselves from one body type into another .....
Marlan made excellent points. I would recommend to her not to train for muscular hypertrophy as she may be one of those females who actually can build muscle much easier than the rest of us.
There was one word in your explanation that struck me. She wants to be more 'lady-like'. When I apply this term to a woman, I usually describe action and countenance, not appearance and not even clothes. Women of every body type can be 'lady-like' (or not).

Combining steady state cardiovascular exercise and interval training with lots of yoga will make her muscles more slim if she is eating a balanced diet.

see many responses regarding the training methodologies but nothing specific about the question of eating. Any commnets on the what/how/when regarding her ingestion of "fuel"?
