At Home Cardio Workouts
What are your favorite cardiovascular workouts for at home exercise? I won't see my girlfriend for 1 1/2 months and she needs some workouts to maintain her progress. Indoor workouts are a must because she lives in Iowa and winter is here! She will also be doing some basic movement training with light loads once or twice a week(squat, lunge, push, pull, rotation, balance). She has been training for 6 weeks @ 2 sessions per week. I want something fun or simple that will get her heart rate up. Can you think of anything other than walking and dancing? Thank you for your thoughts.

I certainly hope that you are expressing your girlfriend's wishes here. - There are many excellent DVDs that are very engaging. I usually tell my clients to go to www.collagevideo.com for an extensive choice.

I am a HUGE fan of Kangoo Jumps. They can be used indoors or outdoors, and on virtually any surface. Have a look at my profile and you will see me using them in the snow in New York.
I can't say enough about Kangoo Jumps. I absolutely love them and teach Kangoo Jumps class at my studio. For me, it is exactly what I need as far as cardio is concerned. It's incredibly fun, I can make it as intense as I want, I feel like I am 10-years old when I wear them and I get a great workout.
If you like more info about the product, shoot me an email.

Those are really cool I went to the official site. They are out of our price range for now but maybe we can get them next year. I would like to get two pairs so we can do it together.

simple take those simple movements and put them into a metabolic circuit. Check out Dos Remidos "Cardio Strength Training" Book or New Rules of Lifting for some really good workout ideas

I like circuits for indoor workouts with a rest between each circuit.
If she has stairs in her house and no knee problems, there are a few stair drills she can complete for an easy 20-30min workout.
There's also plyometrics, jumping jacks, jump rope, running in place, boxing drills, etc.
And she can also download videos to her computer, iphone, ipad or even directly to her tv of all types.
It really depends on what her goals are, what her interests are and where she is training wise as to what she can do cardio wise from her home, but the options are endless!!!!

I like Shawn's idea and you will defintely get some great ideas from Coach Dos Remidos's book.
I personally LOVE metabolic circuits and you can custom make all kinds of circuits.
Check out Workoutmuse.com on YouTube which has an example of such workouts (20/10's, 30/30's, 50/15's etc)
Here is a Cardio/Core 30/30 workout

My Done In One workout video is a GREAT cardio workout! You'll also strengthen your back, chest, core and legs. All you need is one set of dumbbells and some space. You can see a clip of it on my site here. There are easier modifications you can do as shown by a girl who was pregnant when we shot the video.

I definitely agree with the above ideas about circuits. Coach Dos has some great workouts in his book. Personally, I am a fan of kettlebell circuits. Even something as simple as combining swings and squats will get the heart rate up and provide great metabolic benefits.

Jump rope is a good way to get the heart rate up. Work foot speed, rythm, timing, and endurance all at the same time.

Andrew,
I'm actually partial to doing aerobic exercise in cold weather. (Specifically running or jogging). I like the kettlebell idea. David Jack, CSCS, demonstrates a great kettlebell swing here: http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/training-day/201108/lose-fat-2-exercises along with a great squat thrust exercise. You might also consider this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkD9LwDBWW0&feature=related. I think these two guys do a good job of keeping it simple and effective for clients that are more advanced. I think you'll find the two links to be somewhat similar. I like these exercises because they can kick your butt fairly quickly. Yes, these exercises are done by men, however, I see no reason that your girlfriend wouldn't like them considering the information you've provided about her. You don't need too much room to do these exercises either. Other than that, the above suggestions are all great!
I'm confident that you'll come up with a great workout for her. =)

Exercise TV has some useful classes. Some really good ones are the boot camp and kickboxing ones. Fun and they'll get her sweating.
Thank you I heard someone else mention the Exercise TV in another post

Jumping rope is excellent and can be done almost everywhere. Also step training and for advanced clients, kettlebells are great for boosting heart rate. Supersetting is also great and it doesn't take much time to get heart rate in the "zone".

I am doing Turbo Fire right now and I love it! It has HIIT workouts incorporated into the program. If she's not up for HIIT, then Turbo Jam, is a good alternative. http://baltimorefitnessandweightloss.com
